A cave population of Isbrueckerichthys alipionis (Gosline, 1947) in the Upper Ribeira karst area, southeastern Brazil (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Trajano,Eleonora; Secutti,Sandro; Pereira,Edson H. L.; Reis,Roberto E..
A cave population of the armored catfish Isbrueckerichthys alipionis is reported from the Santana Cave, in the rio Betari watershed, Upper Ribeira karst area, Iporanga, São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil. The cave population was compared to an epigean population of I. alipionis and no significant differences where found in morphology or degree of pigmentation. As the cave population is known for at least 30 years and is apparently isolated from epigean streams, it is classified as troglophilic. The discovery of this troglophilic species in the Santana Cave is an additional strong argument for the conservation of that cave.

A Century after! Rediscovery of the ancient catfish Diplomystes Bleeker 1858 (Siluriformes: Diplomystidae) in coastal river basins of Chile and its implications for conservation Neotropical Ichthyology
Muñoz-Ramírez,Carlos P.; Briones,Raul; Colin,Nicole; Fierro,Pablo; Górski,Konrad; Jara,Alfonso; Manosalva,Aliro.
ABSTRACT The ancient catfish family Diplomystidae, with seven species endemic to rivers of southern South America, represents one of the oldest branches of the diverse order Siluriformes. With most species endangered, new reports of these species become extremely valuable for conservation. Currently, it is assumed that Diplomystes species inhabit only Andean (large) basins, and that they are extinct from coastal (small) basins from which their presence have not been recorded since 1919. Here, we document new records of the family Diplomystidae in the Laraquete and Carampangue basins, two coastal basins from the Nahuelbuta Coast Range, Chile, with no previous reports. This finding represents the rediscovery of the genus in coastal basins in more than a...

A CFD approach to assess the effects of different opening combinations in poultry houses AGRIAMBI
Saraz,Jairo A. O.; Rocha,Keller S. O.; Damasceno,Flavio A.; Tinoco,Ilda F. F.; Osorio,Robinson; Tobón,Julio C. A..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to use computational fluids dynamics (CFD) to evaluate hygiene and comfort conditions in function of temperature level and ammonia (NH3) concentration during the night in commercial poultry houses used in Brazil and countries with tropical and subtropical climates. Four models with different curtain heights and different air inlet and outlet positions were used, adopting the open building typology without thermal insulation. The validated CFD model did not present statistical differences from the experimental data, making it possible to use this model to predict the behavior in the four proposed cases. This model can be used to improve the internal conditions of the poultry facilities during the night and could be an...

A cladistic re-assessment of the Polycystis species complex (Polycystididae, Eukalyptorhynchia) OMA
Artois, T.J.; Schockaert, E.R..
The taxonomy of the genus Polycystis Koelliker, 1845 sensu Schockaert & Karling, 1975 is discussed. Character analysis reveals the monophyletic state of the three species groups these authors defined within it. As no synapomorphies for the three groups can be found, the genus is split in three genera: Polycystis Koelliker, 1845, Macrorhynchus Graff, 1882 and Paulodora Marcus, 1948. The systematic position of Macrorhynchus yaganus (Marcus, 1954) Evdonin, 1977 is also discussed, resulting in the erection of the new genus Marcusia gen. n.

A Classification for a Geostatistical Index of Spatial Dependence Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Seidel,Enio Júnior; Oliveira,Marcelo Silva de.
ABSTRACT: In geostatistical studies, spatial dependence can generally be described by means of the semivariogram or, in complementary form, with a single index followed by its categorization to classify the degree of such dependence. The objective of this study was to construct a categorization for the spatial dependence index (SDI) proposed by Seidel and Oliveira (2014) in order to classify spatial variability in terms of weak, moderate, and strong dependence. Theoretical values were constructed from different degrees of spatial dependence, which served as a basis for calculation of the SDI. In view of the form of distribution and SDI descriptive measures, we developed a categorization for posterior classification of spatial dependence, specific to each...

A classification proposal for coefficients of variation in Eucalyptus experiments involving survival, growth and wood quality variables Bragantia
Mora,Freddy; Arriagada,Osvin.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to present a classification proposal for coefficients of variation (CV) in Eucalyptus experiments, aiming at providing a useful tool for experiments involving growth, survival and wood quality traits. Ninety-four studies were selected from a search for peer-reviewed journals yielding a total of 508 data. The CVs were classified as low, moderate, high and very high. The mean, standard deviation, maximum and minimum values, skewness and kurtosis were estimated to describe the distribution shape. The Shapiro-Wilk test confirmed that all variables satisfied the assumption of normality (p < 0.05). The results indicated that the growth traits had the highest variability, being variables strongly affected by the...

A clinical gamma camera-based pinhole collimated system for high resolution small animal SPECT imaging BJMBR
Mejia,J.; Galvis-Alonso,O.Y.; Castro,A.A.de; Braga,J.; Leite,J.P.; Simões,M.V..
The main objective of the present study was to upgrade a clinical gamma camera to obtain high resolution tomographic images of small animal organs. The system is based on a clinical gamma camera to which we have adapted a special-purpose pinhole collimator and a device for positioning and rotating the target based on a computer-controlled step motor. We developed a software tool to reconstruct the target’s three-dimensional distribution of emission from a set of planar projections, based on the maximum likelihood algorithm. We present details on the hardware and software implementation. We imaged phantoms and heart and kidneys of rats. When using pinhole collimators, the spatial resolution and sensitivity of the imaging system depend on parameters such as...

Abstract Background Envenomation caused by multiple stings from Africanized honeybees Apis mellifera constitutes a public health problem in the Americas. In 2015, the Brazilian Ministry of Health reported 13,597 accidents (incidence of seven cases per 100,000 inhabitants) with 39 deaths (lethality of 0.25%). The toxins present in the venom, which include melittin and phospholipase A2, cause lesions in diverse organs and systems that may be fatal. As there has been no specific treatment to date, management has been symptomatic and supportive only. Methods In order to evaluate the safety and neutralizing capacity of a new apilic antivenom, as well as to confirm its lowest effective dose, a clinical protocol was developed to be applied in a multicenter,...

A close look at above ground biomass of a large and heterogeneous Seasonally Dry Tropical Forest - Caatinga in North East of Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
CASTANHO,ANDREA D.A.; COE,MICHAEL; ANDRADE,EUNICE M.; WALKER,WAYNE; BACCINI,ALESSANDRO; CAMPOS,DIEGO A.; FARINA,MARY.
Abstract This work is focused on characterizing and understanding the aboveground biomass of Caatinga in a semiarid region in northeastern Brazil. The quantification of Caatinga biomass is limited by the small number of field plots, which are inadequate for addressing the biome’s extreme heterogeneity. Satellite-derived biomass products can address spatial and temporal changes but they have not been validated for seasonally dry tropical forests. Here we combine a compilation of published field phytosociological observations with a new 30m spatial resolution satellite biomass product. Both data were significantly correlated, satellite estimates consistently captured the wide variability of the biomass across the different physiognomies (2-272 Mg/ha). Based...

A Closed-Type Irrigation System Performaces in the Plant House CIGR Journal
Dewi, Vita Ayu Kusuma; Setiawan, Budi Indra; Minasny, Budiman; Wasodo, Roh Santoso Budi; Liyantono, Liyantono.
Water application in the plant house is usually done by surface irrigation and manual micro-irrigation. Because of the conventional irrigation system’s inefficiency, water-saving irrigation has been developed. Smart or automated irrigation usually uses a microcontroller to maintain irrigation timing and soil moisture conditions. This automation is highly efficient in water application and can increase plant productivity. However, this system is costly and the irrigation components are not always available for smallholder farmers. Here we develop an automatic irrigation technology based on the capillarity principle that dramatically reduces the cost. This irrigation technology does not use any microcontroller device and the components can be easily...
